From a fragrance fanatic to an independent business owner. 

Stephen set up George Stevens Candles & Co in 2018, after having a keen interest in fragrances and aromatherapy, his products were a hit with family and friends. Building social media platforms and a website to help spread the word about his local Liverpool business, the followers and orders were continuously growing. 

What was the next step?

From online orders to meeting new customers, Stephen attended his first vegan Christmas market 

“I did my first Christmas market and it was terrifying, it was an all-vegan market and went phenomenal! I got a lot of great feedback, repeat customers after it and then it kept growing from there really”

Stephen held his first pop-up shop at John Lewis in his local city of Liverpool and was thrilled to showcase his brand in the leading department store. Within the first few days, Laura from the pop-up team received an email from Stephen;

“Just dropping you a quick message to let you know everything is going great! I am having an absolute ball, seriously having a great time! The staff here are so amazing and so helpful and my stand is so great! Cannot thank you enough for this!

The John Lewis staff has been absolutely phenomenal. On the first day they helped me with stock and showing me to my pop-up space. The visual merchandising team gave fantastic advice on how to arrange my products with height and depth to create a more exciting display. 

Throughout the week they have been so helpful and attentive. I couldn’t thank them enough, they’ve been fantastic, every single one of them!”

The pop-up shop experience

“I wanted to get it out there as much as I could that I was hosting a pop-up shop through The Great British Pop-up, so I created a social media post and flyer which I forwarded on to my friends and family, they then shared it to help spread the word. I wanted to make sure that my customers new where I was going to be, what date, time and location. So using social media and flyers was key to getting the word out”

With having such a great time meeting new and existing customers, Stephen decided to stay for another week! We went to visit Stephen and his pop-up to hear more about his brand and his pop-up experience. We asked Stephen what were the key benefits of hosting a pop-up were for his business;

“I’d say that a top benefit is definitely brand awareness. Everyone who walks past gets to see your logo, products and speaks to the face behind the brand, I’d say that is a massive part of doing this. Also having your products in John Lewis, an upmarket department store!”

“Another is the followers for my social media channels. My followers have skyrocketed since being here, I’ve had a lot of great feedback, reviews and fantastic customer pictures of the products they purchased.”

Stephen’s Small business advice

“The best piece of advice I could give is to be confident, even if you’re not, just believe in yourself! If it’s the first time doing an event like this, or selling face to face, be confident in yourself and your brand.

What I’ve learned from being here these two weeks, is that people love seeing and being able to talk to the face behind the brand. It’s being great to chat to customers in person, talk about my products and give advice based on their needs. Even if it doesn’t end in a sale, people love supporting, small, local, and independent businesses and I have seen that for my business whilst being in-store”
